Christmas is a busy time
For our football teams
With snow and mud and frozen pitch
No sign of peppermint cremes

The players struggle to keep their feet
In boots of many tints
Tottering under the weight of snood
Gloves, hat and ego-splint

Us fans don’t have it easy
Sitting high up in the stands
Wondering how we’re going shift
The pile of lemon meringues

Three pounds of Brussels Sprouts

We’re remembering the trifle
Dates, nuts and box of figs
The bumper tin of Quality Street

The tub of Cheese Footballs (hurrah!)
The pork and cranberry pie

We’re remembering our promise
To keep toys stocked with batteries
Regretting the pints of shandy
Which led to ridiculous flattery

So is flu and dreaded in-laws
The saucepan set that cost twenty notes
Hasn’t gone down well indoors

So our wish to Father Christmas
Each year it is the same
Whatever else Christmas brings us
Please bring us lots of games
