Was dealt us, by a short stocky figure
Evidence proves to this day, he stuck it away
Past Shilton, with the aid of five fingers.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 That may well be so and the purists all know
Deigo’s dined on it professionally since
But least we forget when he stuck away the second
World Football proclaimed it’s new Prince.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Terry Butcher? Still trying to catch him
Peter Reid? Trailing in his wake
Terry Fenwick? Dreams he got a tackle in
Steve Hodge? Has Maradona’s shirt as a keepsake.

Says Peter Reid, tongue stuck firmly in cheek
On reflection the Maradona of a quarter century ago
Commanded more than a clobbering by Shilton to stop him!

Notes

The first was a nailed on hand-ball, and the second? A master merely toying with the opposition (us) any which way he wanted. We couldn’t get near him.

Peter Reids post match comments aimed at Shilton are surely in jest are they not, and kinda passing the buck somewhat, from the only mortal who had the chance of dispossessing the maestro, when Maradona initially began THAT breathtaking run for the sublime second goal in his own half, and history was made?

A wonderful memory of a man playing beautiful football right at the top of his game, often carrying the national team to boot, before it all went dramatically pear shaped for him.
