Ode to Football
¶ 1

Forty odd years now
running at
your side, football.
At first
you tripped me up, repeatedly
and I fell to earth
muddied but unfazed
as desperate, as any lovelorn,
to arise and chase you again.
And then
as my eyes sparkled
at the brightest stars on view
their majesty
became my kingdom.
Later I wallowed
in your muddied charms
as you pulled me to your bosom
and nourished me,
the Earth mother
to my ‘need a pass’ complex craving. *

Lovely
it was,
while I was physically able,
to be part
of the partaking.

The poetry of it all,
I try to translate now.
