At school,
in the hotbed of the playground,
I’d always volunteer to play
left-wing
‘cos that’s where he played-
Laurie Cunningham,
best player I’d ever seen
in all my nine years…..

I was back in a school-
this time on the other side of the desk,
teaching conversational English
to giggling teenage girls and business execs.
Sometimes, though, the conversation would turn to football.

I’ll always remember that day-
best lesson I ever taught.
Albion fan and Real Madrid fan,
remembering the good old days;
(he didn’t have to remember quite as far back as me!)

My heart skipped a tackle at the mere mention
of his name after all those years.
Robbed from the Baggies
for around a million, I sighed.
Ten minutes we kicked around vocabulary
that would best describe him…
