Still dreaming / How on earth?

Every time I go for a walk
I dare myself
to lift one knee
higher
and then the next
higher
lengthen my stride
and repeat lift
again and again
in the vain hope
that my heel might hold
the ankle might not turn
the hip might not hop
the knee might not twist
and the calf
might not develop a knot
as big as a fist….
and then
(logically)
I see myself taking to the field
down at the Bridge – and becoming
the first octogenarian
to score for the Blues, on my debut – of course
followed by a hat-trick a week later… 😉
and this satisfies me because it means
I still have a few years left
to achieve the dream!
