They slip silently away
Their boots packed up their laces done
Their dreams of better days

Pushed back behind the mask

History is breathing down
From walls and roams the pitch
A shout a nod a feint a lob
“Did you see what he just did?”

So put away those glory songs
Those flags that filled the skies
Wrap up the scarves the banners fold
This truth they can’t disguise

The Liver Bird she cries
“Christ tell me where’s our men of iron?
