The Burden of The Past

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The shadows of the past depart
They slip silently away
Their boots packed up their laces done
Their dreams of better days

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The football left upon the park
The training sessions past
Philosophy and poetry
Pushed back behind the mask

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 History is breathing down
From walls and roams the pitch
A shout a nod a feint a lob
“Did you see what he just did?”

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 So put away those glory songs
Those flags that filled the skies
Wrap up the scarves the banners fold
This truth they can’t disguise

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 We’re second best a laughing stock
The Liver Bird she cries
“Christ tell me where’s our men of iron?
The passion and the pride?”

Notes
