Grew up listening to my Dads tales
About all these great football stars
He would tell me about Tom Finney
Stanley Matthews, Duncan Edwards.

He would talk about players I saw in books
Black and white pictures of these football greats
Telling me about the goals they scored
And games that were talked about for years.

But one footballer he kept bringing up all the time
Went by the name of Nat Lofthouse
Said he was as tough as a coal miners boots
And nobody ever messed about with tough Nat.

I sat there enthralled at what my Dad would say
“What do you mean he barged the keeper in the net ? ”
Discovered that was allowed those days
And Nat wasn’t shy at using his strength now and then.

Nat played for Bolton Wanderers and England
Stayed loyal not like a lot of players nowadays
But he was not just all hustle and bustle
He could score and could be good with ball at his feet.

So rest in peace the Lion of Vienna
I bet the Bolton fans will be shedding a tear
Your name is up there with Matthews and Finney
A true gentleman and a true football legend.
