The penalty taker

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 All level after ninety odd minutes
now the dreaded penalty shoot out
the fans nerves are taut
players trying to look calm.
The first one steps up
and puts the ball on the spot
the keeper trying to put him off
he blasts it over the bar.
Each player takes his turn
some miss but some don’t
it’s all down to one final penalty
put it away and you’ve won.
Hands nervously grab the ball
a heart beating very fast
keeper says a remark walking by
the player blanks it out.
Will he place it in the corner
or blast it down the middle
only the player knows that
he runs up to the ball.
The keeper dives to his left
but the ball goes to the right
it nestles in the bottom corner
he gets mobbed by his team-mates.

Notes

When I played the beautiful game I never ever took a penalty,so I don’t know how a player feels when having to take one. But I know what it feels like as a fan and one word sums it up for me : AGONY !
