The smells of Football

Football has it’s own smells
from the grass on the pitch
to the aroma of hot dog stalls.
In the dressing room there’s sweat,
strong odour coming from ointments
being massaged into aching muscles.
On the terraces you smell beer,
years ago there was tobacco too
on Boxing Day the whiff of cigar smoke.
As a boy my mother’s washing powder
making my kit smell nice and fresh
and getting rid of the grass stains.
The smell of leather from a pair
of new football boots and ball
and layers of black polish.
Half-time oranges at a match
played on the playing fields
always smelled so sweet.
These smells from Football
like memories stay with you
some good and some bad !
