A schoolboy craze for
Swapping footballers’ faces –
Five for three (new) pence,
In packets with pink gum,
Made the cards smell sweet.

So it seemed – players galore
In the palm of your hand,
To barter, to haggle, to bluff
For the one you really wanted
To complete the set.

Bestie might be worth three
Of Ipswich, or Stoke City.
Negotiate; that Spurs goalie
For two Wolves strikers –
FKS, ABC, an album full
Of childhood memories.

Some were hard to find,
Others ten a penny –
Too many of one,
Not enough of another.
Supply and demand,
Lessons for later life…

Reprints I reckon –
After all, who would have
Kept those grubby little
Pictures for thirty five years ?
People like me, of course.
