I looked up at the clock
Orange lights said seconds to go
Heading into extra time
Falling further into the night.
A pass sliced through us
From midfield to the striker
He tussled with a defender
Then thundered towards the goal.
I chased after him to make a tackle
My breath pounding as I hunted
But there was no stopping him
Just the striker and the goalkeeper.
He pulled back his leg and swung
I witnessed with a sinking feeling
The goalkeeper was in no man’s land
As the ball met its destiny.
When it hit the back of the net
I crumbled to my knees
Half the stadium erupted with passion
I only saw sweat on our faces.
We all fall down
Them with ecstatic reactions
Us with chaotic despair
The grass becomes a kingsize bed.
A night a hero is made
But sprawled out on this pitch
I have given it all up
Until the next time I walk out the tunnel.
