Great Song, But What Does It All Mean?

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I’m stuck In a traffic jam, outside Madame Tussauds
As West Bromwich Albion knock one in
When all of a sudden, these old familiar chords
Come belting out of me radio…..”Irene, Goodnight, Irene”!

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 When the second flew in, some time later
Their response was exactly the same
What’s the score (sic) with them Rovers spectators
Is that song sung at every game?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Pulling one back from a fruitfull attack
“Irene” rang out once more
T’would seem that they sung this, throughout the whole match
Irrespective of the final score!

Stuck in traffic in London’s Marylebone Road, yesterday, listening to the cup-tie on the wireless. West Brom score first, then this song that I’ve not heard since I was kid, comes belting out of our van speakers, from the Rovers fans, and they were getting beat!

West Brom score again, same thing. When Rovers score, to pull a goal back, the radio commentary was completely drowned out by another en masse rendition of… Irene, Goodnight, Irene.

Terrific stuff, but what does it all mean?

There’s gotta be a Rovers fan out there to explain, surely?
