The Patience of Job

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Now if you’ve read your Bible,
You’ll know a man named Job.
He’s fabled for his patience,
When faced with many woes.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 He lost all of his seven sons,
And lots of his livestock,
But always he stayed patient,
And kept his faith in God.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Well if you are a football fan,
With Job you’ll empathise,
When you go through the turnstile,
To watch your favourite Side.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 You will not lose your children,
Your camels, oxen, asses,
But patience does not go amiss
When watching football matches.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 First patience-tester is the Ref,
Who knows what he’ll decide?
These days it seems his orders
He takes direct from Sky.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Next up there is the Vee Ay Ar,
Which really should be scrapped –
It has not improved things one jot,
Just interrupts the match.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 And then there’s your own players,
See how they sitters miss!
Or give away soft penalties,
And barn doors cannot hit.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 And though they’re all paid loads of cash,
Much more than you can earn,
At times it seems the basics
They haven’t even learned.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 So if you go to watch a match,
Don’t say you’ve not been warned.
Like Job be well with patience armed,
To face a perfect storm!

Notes

I started writing this on Sunday 8th February after Genoa lost 3-2 at home to Napoli. A frustrating match – two lengthy VAR checks, a soft penalty for Napoli in the 95th minute, thanks to which they scored their third goal… Patience sorely tested.
