Liking Garrincha

I’ve never liked dribblers
Those kids in the playground who hogged the ball
Refusing to pass even when you’re free
Seemingly determined to walk the ball into the goal.

But I like Garrincha.
I’ve only seen fleeting footage
Tricks played on anonymous defenders
Exhibiting skill like it’s second nature
While an adoring crowd laughs and cheers.
How could anyone not be entertained?

Although I relate more to the striker standing unmarked in the box
Waiting for the cross, begging him to pass,
Just pass and we’ll score.
Yet I still like him.

And he lost friends
Angered team-mates
Ignored responsibilities.
I can see why people would have disliked him as a person
But even I can’t see why people would have disliked him as a footballer.
