Short Memories Or What?

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Next time there’s a five fifteen kick off
Here’s one fan who’s doing a bunk
To sit in me seat on the sofa indoors
And the stadium? I’ll leave that to the unruly drunks.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 That Congolese boy, Samba, was out for the count
In danger of swallowing his tongue
When the Brahms and Lizst rabble started to rant
“He’s timewasting, add some time on”.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 “Carry him off, restart the game
Come on ref, he ain’t really injured”
Would a bloke stay knocked down with the vacant sign out
For the sake of a wasted few minutes?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 As The Savage condemed all the jeering
Aimed at his prone team-mates form
The well on the way crowd then turned on him
With a crescendo of verbal assault.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Was I the only punter looking about me
Midst the furore of moronic abuse?
Thinking it feels like we’re back in the old days
When football fans, drank far too much booze.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Some Chelsea fans, it would seem have short memories
At least those who’d had too much to drink
Remember John Terry last year at the Millenium
When same serious head injury…. happened to him?

Notes

Twenty minutes from time this game had nil-nil draw written all over it, I thought to meself and I was right on the money.

It’s the incident, ten minutes from the end of the game, when Andriy Shevchenko accidentally kicked the Blackburn Rovers defender, Christopher Samba, in the head is what this poems really about.

It was one of those rare times when I’m sad to say I was ashamed to be a Chelsea stroke football supporter or even be sat amongst some of the moron’s who call themselves fans. The verbal abuse being aimed at this boy as he lay spark out in the goal mouth was a very distressing and disturbing episode of events to have to witness. Suffice to say most of the fans involved, and there were quite a few of them, were embarrasingly drunk. But to use that as an excuse would be letting those concerned off far too lightly.

I said to one moron near me, as the manic obscene chanting toward Samba and then Robbie Savage continued. “That boy’s not lieing down there, out cold for a laugh, he’s genuinely injured” A comment that didn’t even register through the haze of an alcoholic stupor!

A similiar thing happened to John Terry last year so I thought maybe, just maybe our fans would have some modicum of understanding for the prone figure of Christopher Samba?. Did they Hell. Not a bit of it!

Thanks Kev for this. I too watched sickened as the scene unfolded in horror live in a pub full of Mn U fans (cheering on Blackburn as fans will do these days). I was horrified by the behaviour of some of the Blues fans behind the goal. There was in all at least a 7 minute delay as medical staff stuggled to comfort and ease the totally concussed Samba from the field to hospital. This meant the cameras were focused rigidly on the Chlesea fans ringing their mates to tell them they were on tele, lifting shirts and grinning etc. Meanwhile a brave opposing defender ,barely feet from them, could be fighting for his life. What have we become ?.I shudder to think what the scene would have been like some twenty years back, when racism was at is height..Glad to hear Samba hasrecovered a little and came round ok.
You’re right Kev, how quuicky we forget John Terry and Petr Cech’s horrendous blows, where on both occasions fans of both side remained silent ,concerned and respectful. Our best wishes to Christopher Samba from The Footblal Poets. That was some accidental kick in the head the boy took from Sheva . Crispin
