these painted faces hair and clothes
these bouncing girls and men
they bay like armies off to war
why can’t we sing like them

their energy drums wild and free
we never quite compare
our children’s songs and age-old hymns
just don’t quite take me there

they boom and roar their voice soar
their passion know no bounds
they heave as one beneath the sun
and fill these Summer grounds

they dance and leap in unison
their voices rise again
we’re turgid in comparsion
why can’t we roar like them?

we’re like the mouse that longs to be
a lion strong and loud
our blood is just the same as theirs
and we are no less proud

it’s time to make a mighty sound
it’s time to start again
next time we grace the bigger stage
oh let us roar like them
