You know you’ve made it when
twenty five thousand fans
chant your name and proclaim you
as their King.

You know you’ve made it when
uncles and mates still recount the time
they met you on holiday in Spain
and told how you had no airs and graces about you.

You know you’ve made it when
they put your picture on ornate iron gates
that stretch around one end of the ground
where you buried so many unstoppable goals.

You know you’ve made it when
the council keep scrubbing your name
from canal bridges but, somehow,
it appears again in the middle of the night.
