Three Lions In Red

The strength, the power, the skill, the commitment;
Gerrard, Robson, Edwards, three generations in red
Of country and club – great English virtue – three
Lions on their shirts, in their hearts. An inner desire
To succeed, to battle on against all odds. Be it a
Cold afternoon in November, away from home and
Up against it – or on a sun-kissed May day in a
Cup Final. Leadership, by example, by style.

Stevie G. – a scouser, a local lad in a team of
Many nations. The man with whom the fans
Relate. Gets stuck in, ball-striker supreme, also
Passer, tackler – up and down. A presence when
It’s needed, a leader when it’s needed. When
They’re in a hole, he gets them out of it. Pure
Gold. Irreplaceable, and true to his roots. The
Man for all seasons, a trophy lifter, a winner.

Robbo – Captain Marvel, they called him. A
Comic book character bought to life at Old
Trafford, not forgetting a key role in Albion’s
Last great team. Injury prone, sure – but when
He fired he fired on all cylinders. World Cups,
Caps aplenty. Steered United through rocky
Times and went into management, but not with
Lasting success. It was on the field he gave his all.

Big Dunc – Dudley boy who became a man ahead
Of his time, but that time halted in tragedy. How
He had personified the young spirit of his team
In the frugal fifties – a regal, overwhelming star
In a team of stars. His unquenchable thirst for
The game he loved, a fierce pride, a deep desire
To be the best. But still modest, still grateful for
The gifts bestowed upon him. A talent supreme.

A trio of England’s finest, reflective of it’s great
Footballing strengths down the ages. Indomitable,
Indefatigable. Indestructible. Purely inspirational.
