By sheer endeavour and serendipity
you might get lucky with, say, ninety words
as when non-leaguers tame a city team
for ninety words something gels
the cliches kept on hold
the word selection somehow right
and for ninety words a madness reigns
a line or two masquerades as total poetry
Christ they’re talking Whitebread prize
why not the Booker too?
but words beyond the ninety mark
can not sustain the poem’s pace
or a metaphor beyond fatigue
the full stop can not come too soon
type it type it now. Too late
The New Yorker debut will have to wait
