Half a loaf

I’ve never been an ambitious sort of person –
half a loaf is better than no bread.
4-0 thumpings do not leave me cursin’,
1-0 victories do not turn my head.

I don’t expect we’ll challenge for the title –
mid-table coffee has a lovely smell.
The only thing that I consider vital
is that we don’t descend back into hell.

I do not need my fix of cups and honours –
I do not crave a dream world like a junkie.
A brand new chapter’s suddenly upon us
but slowly, slowly’s how to catch a monkey.

If we lose a match or two, what matters?
Do things right, success will come at length.
A mirror not secured well often shatters –
firm foundations guarantee its strength.
¶ 5

So let us not treat losses with attrition
and cut out all the European talk.
Let’s revel in our current league position
ahead of little teams like Bohs and Cork.
