THIS IS OUR YEAR!

¶ 1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We’ve been working t’wards this season, getting better every year.
Sure, we’ve gone through many changes, but at last our time is here!
All the signs this year were positive – our prospects looking bright –
With new gear, and ground, and players who had finally seen the light.
It’s no secret that this season our big gains were UC’s loss,
And Al became our Manager and Mickey was the Boss.

¶ 2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The season started with a jolt – a loss to ANU,
But it showed exactly where we were, and what we’d have to do.
After several hard-fought wins, one Saturday we came alive,
As we kept Juventus scoreless while we calmly racked up five!
And I’d say this was a turning point, removing any doubt,
Juventus are not easy-beats, but Raj shut Marco out!
We had risen to the top and we couldn’t see a reason
Why we couldn’t keep on winning and remain on top all season!

¶ 3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 After losing that first game we then won ten games on the trot,
With that solitary exception, we took on and beat the lot!
Though we couldn’t match that awesome record through the second round,
With three games to go we knew that we were semi-final bound!
And with a winning finish, and some ANU fatigue,
We finished minor premiers – that’s right – top of the league!

¶ 4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Juventus scraped in fourth (Ginninderra having cheated),
And so we hoped our first round win could somehow be repeated.
But, of course, it’s not that easy – they played with heart and soul –
But Johnny sank their spirits with a priceless golden goal.

¶ 5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 And so all is as it should be for the final, 1 v 2:
Minor premiers, Canberra City, versus second-placed ANU.
And I know the boys are ready, they have all helped get us here,
We have earned this piece of history, this is ours, this is our year!

¶ 6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 There’s reluctant Chris in goals, Om, Raj and Guna at the back,
Dave or Col at sweeper, Baz and Tony in attack,
And in the middle, me, Matt, Col or Dave, and Johnny Greco,
And waiting in the wings we’ve got Al, Ben, and lately Leo.
Though missing from the finals, you’ll still know he’s there alright,
It’s not Sir, but Mickey, Alex’, our calm and guiding light.

¶ 7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 We all have different memories of Canberra City’s past,
But we’ve made it here together, and our time has come at last!
For some it’s been a journey that began so long ago,
Yet for others it’s a winning team whose past they didn’t know.
Two who’ve travelled that whole journey, “Chopper” Reid and “Collymore”
Will stand proudly with their team-mates – Champions of State League 4!
