A simple chore; and the journey thereupon…

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 “Hello darkness, my old friend”
I love that tune
I hum it, as I attend
To the humdrum, picking up dirty laundry
I let the song wash over me
And then, I mull over the lyrics
Letting them tumble, as I fumble
They’re not my words
And they’re not about me
I consider myself lucky

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 “Blue Is The Colour!”
They’re not just my words, they’re our words
And we share them, anthemically
Boisterously, cheerfully, gleefully
We consider ourselves, so lucky

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 “Walk on, walk on, with hope in your hearts”
That’s their words
And they’re lucky
They share them, they absorb them, they drive them on
They use them as a wall, as a shield, as a barrier of sound
The song, the scarves, are part of their heritage
Their rock
We salute them
We envy them

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 “Walk on, walk on…..”
And then they sing it for 96 individuals
And we share the gut-wrenching emotion
We share as a family
Yet we cannot begin, to share the pain
And so we try not to condescend
And we certainly won’t, let anyone defend
All the wrongs.
So we enjoin
We support
And we’ll never, ever, forget

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 “Hello darkness, my old friend”
May be a consequence
“Walk on”, may be an antidote
A release, for the gnawing sense of hurt
And yet still we blurt
Why couldn’t they just release
The gates
When it mattered?

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Hopes forever shattered.
And we hate
The Sound of Silence.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 All I did
Was pick up the away jersey….
For a dark wash

Notes

Also at the back of my mind, was the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 60 Review that I watched on New Year’s Day, and the Helen Rollason Award given posthumously to Anne Williams, who died in April, who had campaigned so tirelessly for the 96.

I subsequently read the lyrics for the Simon and Garfunkel song ‘The Sounds of Silence’ – so profound, so poignant, so clever, so brilliant.
