‘Keepers

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It was a good height for the keeper
An easy save to make
The forward shot straight at him
No problem, piece of cake

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Keepers never get the credit
For acrobatic body swerves
Agility and concentration
And, facing penalties, steel nerves

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Goalies are subject to ridicule
When each blue moon they drop a clanger
The media milk the one mistake
Poached by a hungry goal hanger

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 It went under him or through his legs
Or worse, he was beaten by a lob
Fans call for his understudy
They say the juggler should lose his job

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The keeper was world class today
Making saves centre, left and right
He stopped 105 shots on target
But so what? They were all a nice height!

Notes

What is a good height for a keeper anyway? I reckon 6’3″ or he’ll have trouble getting low and be prone to back injuries. Seriously, it bugs me when commentators/summarisers pass off excellent work by our number ones by saying ‘good height for the keeper’ Yes, our game is about goals but I enjoy a fine goalkeeping display just as much.

Goalkeepers proverb: Parry in haste, repent at leisure

Growing up, my favourites were Jennings, Clem, Peter the Cat Bonetti, Banks, and later our very own Bryan Gunn (is he really Scottish?!!!!!!!!)
and John Ruddy. All time favourite keeper – Andy Marshall.
