A World Cup Prayer

May the goals be the goals that we watch years from now.
May the saves be the same for the keepers.
May the fans be behaved. May officials allow
enough tackles that matches aren’t sleepers.
May the divers all drown in their own seas of red.
May the cheaters be chased from the forum.
May these Finals include only Players instead.
May they give the Game back its decorum.
May we all be surprised when we think there’s a match
where the outcome’s a foregone conclusion.
May there be that small nation to which we’ll attach
gratitude for its World Cup inclusion.
May our host country reconcile sporting and living
again like we thought it once taught us,
May this month mostly be about sharing and giving
and not about what time has bought us.
May we shout, may we cry, may we live, may we die,
small successes and failures to weather,
May we gather again in just four more years time
to remind we’re all in this together.
