Henry ‘Harry’ Abbott

Long before multi-coloured jerseys
Names and numbers
And orange boots
Goalkeepers
Wrapped in woolly jumpers
Baggy long shorts
And sturdy black boots
Built for mud and mistimed tackles
Nelson’s Harry Abbott
Stands imperious pristine proud
Guardian of his goalposts
No dreams of emerald pitches
Or freshly laundered grass
But the pragmatic thud of limbs on leather
Blood spit mud
The united colours of football
Harry Abbott cost £15 from Pompey
Played 89 consecutive league games
Sliding through mud glorious mud
Into record books.
