Jumpers from goalposts

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I’m ringing you
over and over
and over again
c’mon,
pick up,
please
I have to hear you’re ok
please, please
it’s not meant to end this way

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I keep ringing
you go to voicemail
but you don’t return my call
then
as I try – and try
and try again
there’s no response
none at all
the network
can’t handle
the overload
I can’t handle
the dawning truth…
I’m ringing you
over and over
but nothing…

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 it’s 9/11
in downtown New York
so good they named it twice
but you don’t answer, even once
I need to hear your voice
I need to hear you’re ok
please
I need
I need
we all need ….

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 it’s 9/11
many years hence
and life has moved on
fun, laughter
sickness, grief
business booming
business brief
new news
old news
my muse
their mews
sports news
Yankees news
soccer news
all seems so normal….
but the anniversary looms
and you’re never at training

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 we’ve retired your jersey

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 you’re no longer part of the team
but you were always part of our dream
and you will always, always be remembered

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 we’ll never know
if your ashes just took to the wind
or if you jumped –
not to head the ball
but because you considered that fall
was your only hope….

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 The Twin Towers
like corporate goalposts
with terrorists shooting
in off both uprights
delivering us only
the devil’s goal

Notes

God rest their souls.

It’s 13 years on, but we will never forget.

I worked there back in ’94, so…
If I’d stayed, it could have been me.
