Notes

A moving account in football scores format, which I compiled recently from records held by the National football Museum of those known footballers killed in action from league teams at the time.

It includes Walter Tull, a legend at the time and the first black officer, but does not include numberss for the dead from the Irish ,Non-League, Scottish League or Welsh .

A harrowing and poignant list of teams and their First World War casuaties whioch was beautifully read to a stunned and silent audience by Jonny Fluffypunk at the recent Trenchcoats for Goalposts Christmas Truce (work very much in progress) gig here in Stroud on 14th Dec. We will be performing this again next year in a fully enhanced format as a structured play with poetry and music in a local theatre.

From recent contact with the cub statistician at Forest Green Rovers (our local side here in Stroud) we have now discovered that three of the club’s players were killed in action in the War. Heart of Midlothian were the first ever team to sign up and enlist (along with officials and over 1000 Hearts fans, who fought alongside each other and lost a whole team of 11 players in the process..

The Footballers Batallion was formed to encourage footballers at the time time to join up and Play The Game .Their posters have also featured recently on our Facebook page.

Postscript: Sadly and ironically, at first glance the list also resembles the often bizarre scores we used to get at Christmases long ago. Eg;.my first ever Christmas Day (morning) game in 1957 (aged 9) was Chelsea 7 (Greaves 4) Portsmouth 4
