Open Session

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Closed books. We simply couldn’t read them.
Open training sessions traced a line of logic
across our columns. It was errant. Non-existent.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The real plan was made behind the double doors
behind the double doors and down the corridor.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 It was verbal and written on a whiteboard.
It was whispered and scrawled in note form.
It was a small look and a typed letter,
a phone call entirely untraceable.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 In the office was an audience of one.
There was no-one else to like, demur
or applaud. What was said would remain
behind closed doors. So we made notes

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 on patterns which would never happen
in the game, runs they were never coached
to make, misleading chats with assistants,
tattoos and drills which threw us off the scent.

Notes

This relates in part to the story of Celtic’s Champions League victory, before which they held an open training session populated by ringers and hangers-on. The Inter Milan squad watched and later admitted to a false sense of security.

I was also thinking about how in an age of media/social media saturation we can feel we know the truth about people when we probably don’t.
