Jim took an egg out of the box,
And held it up quite candidly,
Then, bless his little cotton socks,
He cracked it single-handedly.

He blithely poured the contents in
The boiling water pot,
Then tossed the shell into the bin,
With an unerring shot.
¶ 3

After several minutes he,
With spatula, did fish
The egg out of the pot with glee
And place it on a dish.

It was the best egg ever seen,
The reward of great endeavour,
Though Jimmy Greaves had always been
The greatest poacher ever.
