Barracking Trump

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Can we do it?
Yes we can!
And we did
We went out and we played our matches
Bettered the opposition when we could
And enjoyed sporting contests
With fluent football to the fore.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 But now we regrettably face
An opponent that side-swipes us
Invades and infects
And trips up our lungs, squeezing them
To oblivion.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 In our post-match analysis, the finger pointing has started
With a clarity emerging
That we had a better class of defenders
Under previous management.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 “Absolute chaotic disaster”
Would be like Fergie calling out Mourinho
Or Keano dissing McCarthy;
Instead we have Obama, amidst the drama
Voicing our firm suspicion
As too many more
Head to the mortician.

Notes

09/05/2020: Barack Obama voiced a personal opinion in private about the way D Trump has led the USA response to Covid-19. Obama’s personal observations somehow entered the public realm, and I’ve used the headline comment as the driver for this poem.

The conspiracy theorists in my family think this leak was politically motivated, the thinking being it is a desperate attempt by the Democrats to undermine Trump, with Joe Biden (the likeliest Democratic nominee), struggling in the polls, in Presidential election year.

My stymied view is more about the preservation of life, and then, when are we going to get football back safe and sound for all?
