Today’s Modern Stadia

It’s OK, you’re safe now, in today’s modern stadia,
Spacious bar, view from afar, mod-cons there to aid ya,
Concrete and steel, a giant wheel, a roof above your head,
No more facing the elements, gone has the wooden shed.

No standing please, you have a good view, in today’s modern stadia,
But something is missing that makes me feel that this isn’t quite Arcadia,
I know what it is, it’s the ghosts of the past that watched with me high on the Kop,
But all I have now is a stranger with kids dining on french fries and pop.

Not that I’m knocking, not that I’m mocking, today’s modern stadia,
Maybe I’m old but they just leave me cold and I think that I’m nearing nadir,
So take me back to the cold roofless terrace, take me back to the old creaking stands,
Though the rain burned my face, I was home in the place, take me back, let the ghosts hold my hands.
