Oliver Hopkin
¶ 1

He was a boy of seventeen,
And didn’t know just how obscene
The war was to men,
Young and old,
Who went to war,
So brave and bold.
He signed up,
To get away from his farm,
He didn’t think,
He’d get into any harm.
He lived in a terrace,
“Two up, two down”
And had always lived,
In the same old town.
He could not read,
Nor could he write,
So he signed up,
To go and fight.
He had no money,
He was so poor,
And was only,
5’2” tall.
He had never travelled,
Very far before,
Just to Newcastle,
To watch football.

So if you think,
These reasons aren’t enough,
And that Oliver’s life,
Was not so tough,
Then why do you,
Think he joined up?
Sitting there,
All proud and smug.
