World Refugee Week

Give these refugees a refuge.
And don’t spit out the word “refugee”
Like it’s a swear word or an expletive;
Remember where the word comes from,
From the word, “refuge”,
A soft and welcoming word,
Like haven or sanctuary.
And don’t prefix “asylum-seekers”
With the word “bogus”,
Instead help those who want sanctuary
Reach the home team’s dressing room,
For there is no security in the visitors’ room,
It’s lonely and threatening and temporary.
So, oi ref,
Give these refugees a refuge.

World Refugee Week is about to start – raising consciousness about the cultural contribution made by refugees to Britain etc. Our Kurdish children are thrilled by what we did yesterday – we downloaded their work from this site and photocopied it into the colours of the Kurdish flag and made up a giant flag from their work. A good start to the week.
