When my dad came home
From several long years of the War
My mum was crying
To see him again
As he walked back through our door

Swung me on his back
And said we’re off to football
Smiling he said
We’ll go the match
Mother daughter and all

The women the children the men
When soldiers and families came together

Editorial Note from Crispin: I love this poem so much.It was written on Sunday June 18th 2005 at a football poetry workshop we ran in Pimlico Library in 90 degrees or more (!) about the impact of the pivotal Chelsea v Moscow Dynamo game. Played on 13th Nov 1945, estimates claim over 100,000 crammed into Stamford Bridge, risking life and limb, lining rooves and touchlines to see the Russians. With celebration in the air and the War barely 3 months over, thousands of soldiers were returning, dazed and confused. People were desperate,though in many cases afraid , to get back to some kind of ‘normal life’ again! The way Rachel has approached and written this poem , really moved all of us.
On a lighter note i was trying to picture the look on her mum’s face after waiting six long years of waiting and praying to see her bloke again as he bowls in and says.. “guess what sweetheart..we’re off to the footie!” I read it aloud on Rachel’s behalf ,to a pin-drop silence from an audience of stunned teachers and Football In The Community staff at Chelsea’s ground earlier this week.
