Dejection: An Ode
¶ 1

All this long eve, so balmy and serene,
Have I been gazing at the Munich sky,
And its peculiar tint of yellow green:
And still I gaze and with how blank an eye!
At that scoreboard in the sky!
Deutschland 1 England 5!
I no longer feel alive!
Wembley was a glorious birth,
But yet I know, where’er I go
That there hath passed away a glory from the earth.
Whither is fled that visionary gleam,
Whither is it now, the glory and the dream?
