I pulled on my pyjamas.
I slipped between the sheets.
Set the alarm, put out the light,
Then promptly fell asleep.

And as I lay there snoring,
Tucked snug inside my bed,
Some weird oneiric images
Began to fill my head:

A football match was in full swing.
The hour was half-past three.
And every player upon the pitch
Looked like – no kidding – me!

The Strikers and the Centre-Halves,
The Full-Backs and the Wingers,
The Goalies stood between the posts
For me were all dead ringers.

All tall and thin, brown hair, brown eyes,
All clad in white and blue.
The team just then attacking goal,
The one defending too!

I was the hungry Target Man
A-battling hard and brave.
I was the cat-like Keeper,
Who pulled off blinding saves.

I was the Midfield General
Dictating pace of play.
I was the dour Defender
Bent on keeping threats at bay.

I was the Ballboys, Linesmen,
The whistle-blowing Ref.
I was the nerve-racked Gaffer
Sitting squirming on the Bench.

I made a substitution.
Took off the Number Ten.
I threw a fresh player in the fray,
And it was me again!

The Ground was packed with chanting fans,
Crammed to capacitee.
And every one sat or stood there
Looked like – you guessed it – me!

By now Half-Time was drawing near,
No goals had yet been scored.
Some in the Crowd were stifling yawns,
A few seemed downright bored.

I’ve no idea what happened next.
Alarm clock started sounding.
I woke up bathed in beads of sweat,
Pulse racing, heart a-pounding.

So that’s the dream I had last night
As I lay in my bed.
The strangest dream I’ve ever dreamt.
I wonder what it meant?
