Minimum one line reference to football

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 As I set off to work, on the last day of the year, 2001
I resolved, to live life to the full, to have some fun
Determining not to give in, to any irrational fear

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I crunched across the crisp lawn
The sub-zero temperature coating the grass
With a twinkling, sugar-frosted texture
Stiffening the blades
Like icicle clad sentries, seeking solace as they stand guard
Before the dawning annus full-of-possibilitis

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 As I looked up to the two-tone sky
Still dark, yet illuminated by the lunar lamp light
I saw the vapour trail of a trans-atlantic flight
As straight as an old Roy Race rocket
Dissecting the fulsome moon
Like a creaming bullet
And even though, I knew day-break would come soon
The wounding shot
Fair took my breath away
Which billowed, like cumulative nimble clouds
Coloured like curdled milk, wending its wispy way, up to a galaxy
Of un-realised hopes and dreams
And underneath the enlightening moonbeams
I shuddered, both in expectancy and frost-bitten shock
As a scolding Father Time, ticked off his tock

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 With the atmospheric chill, assaulting my visage
I battened down my defences
Buttoned up my coat
Hid my hands in leathery hide
And warmed myself up inside
With tasty toasted thoughts of treats
As I trudged through the streets
Of the delicious delights to come
Hunger, definitely a danger to some
As the shy birds struggle to break the ice
A promise to myself, of something nice
To celebrate my journeys completion, I reckoned
Yes, a bounteous breakfast beckoned!

Notes

A literal interpretation of the editorial team’s directive!

‘A creaming bullet’ : the full moon and the vapour trail were a delicious creamy colour
in the pre-dawn dark sky
And it was so inspiring –
Though my prose be tiring!

Happy New Year everyone
May all your dreams, come true
And may all your teams, pull through

So I guess, that’s me predicting that there’s no Bolton, Derby or Everton fans among us!

This was written before I became an Editor on the site.
The yardstick given at the time, was “A minimum one line football reference is the yardstick.”

New directives from 2005, would see this poem declined, with the footballing reference as ‘too tenuous’. It’s currently left onsite, as an example.
