Last one picked

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 My Dad says when I get older
I will appreciate,
When two people care so much about me
To argue over my fate.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I just don’t understand then
If this statement is right,
When it’s time for the football teams to be picked
I’m always the cause of a fight.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 “You have him,” says one captain
To the other one.
“We’re giving him to you as a gift
before the game has begun.”

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 “We don’t want him.” says the other one.
“He’ll only hinder our team.
Having an extra player, if it’s him,
Won’t be as good as it would seem.”

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 So an argument then breaks out.
It always is this way.
And the only solution to this problem
Is that I decide I can’t stay.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 I go home and tell my Mum
That I played really well.
She’s so proud of me it will break her heart
If to her the truth I did tell.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 So I never ever get a game
Even before a ball is kicked.
That’s what always happens
When you’re the last one picked.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 But I’m not too downhearted
I will never give up.
I still have dreams scoring for Tottenham
Against Arsenal in the FA cup.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 That may seem way off now
But I have other dreams.
My first one is at the moment
Being picked for one of my friends teams.

Notes

This poem is, unfortunately, autobiographical… As a young lad all I wanted to do was to play football, but my friends, and teachers, kept telling me I was no good at it.
It never put me off though still love the game though… (And played it until quite recently)
