Field of Dreams

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Strolling through old Stanley Park
Daylight fades but not quite dark
Men run onto a deserted pitch
Red and blue, the colours bewitch
Hughes, Labone, lead out the teams
Liddell, Dean, on a field of dreams
Shankly, Catterick, watch intently
Is this for real? I sit down gently

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Faces from yesteryear, some I saw
All had passed this way before
Play their game, the whistle blows
As life and death juxtapose
Eyes transfixed, I hardly budge
Then I feel it, an elbow’s nudge
He’s here with me, he’s at my side
I turn and smile, watery-eyed

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Everton give it all they’ve got
Sharp’s fine header, saved by Scott
Liverpool reach the edge of the box
Paisley fires home, that wily old fox
On the far touchline, up they rose
I knew them by their eighties’ clothes
They sing and sing, the loudest yet
Those fans that we will never forget

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 There we all were, together again
Gone was grief and gone was pain
Absent friends, the father and son
Savour a moment as our team won
Wind, rain, walked into the night
“You were lucky. Gave you a fright”
There was Tommy, the truest Blue
Making excuses, so nothing new

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 We talk a while, Dad and me
Things just like they used to be
He hands me a bag of souvenirs
Scarf, rosette, then falling tears
A magical time, yet incomplete
Will he stay? There’s a family to meet
He had to go, to my deep sorrow
Not tonight but there’s always tomorrow

Notes

Inspired by the movie of the same name.

“You know, we just don’t recognise the most significant moments of our lives while they’re happening. Back then I thought, well, there’ll be other days. I didn’t realise that that was the only day”.
Dr Archibald “Moonlight” Graham (Field of Dreams).
