Reds see off gutsy Villa
Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa
Jurgen’s not interested in records
But at Anfield he’s still a killer
17 wins, 17 home games
His Reds sweep past the Villa
Alisson parries El Ghazi’s shot
Villa graft to beat a loss
Looked good too for a precious point
Until Mane lashed in Keita’s cross
Toe to toe with the champions
Smith’s men played with soul
Until Curtis Jones with a new deal
Volleyed his first top flight goal

Champions crash down to earth
Manchester City 4-0 Liverpool
A guard of honour it is
Before the Etihad car crash
It was to be expected
After a week on the lash
So a strong start with no goals
Followed by a period of disjoint
That mega leads been reduced
To a paltry twenty points
Sterling forces a penalty
De Bruyne doesn’t miss
Sterling and Foden seal it
From Ox the goodnight kiss

Liverpool are champions!
Chelsea 2-1 Man City
Pulisic, De Bruyne, Willian
End a three decade black out
A global pandemic couldn’t stop
An end to that Red drought
Kings for the nineteenth time
Hold your heads up high
On a flaming night in June
Walk on, see that golden sky
Earliest and latest ever winners
They looked beyond the ridge
A thirty year wait is over
Crowned champions at the Bridge

A Covid spree at Anfield
Liverpool 4-0 Crystal Palace
Pre match Jurgen was coy
Admitting to once studying Roy
Saha’s injury is a bitter blow
Trent’s strike lighting up the show
With the Reds on half press
It’s easy on the eyes I’ll confess
Fifty games and we still lead the polls
Salah makes it a hundred goals
Thanks to our carers, bless
Football thanks the NHS
A silent Kop roars Fabinho’s rocket
Mane slots a fourth in the pocket

The Ghost Derby
Everton 0-0 Liverpool
Live games return to Merseyside
Football without fans is nothing
Moise Kean’s cameo the highlight
Minus Salah the Reds lack sting
Contemplation for those we’ve lost
All present are taking the knee
Proclaiming “Black Lives Matter!”
United at the ghost derby
Richarlison thunders the strikers mosaic
The Goodison star strikers screen
Into the Gwladys Street upper tier
Nearly took Dixie Dean out clean

Reds go twenty five clear
Liverpool 2-1 Bournemouth
Hendo misses the action
With a hamstring injury
Klopp scoffs at the mere thought
Of comparisons with Shankly
They toppled another record
By Shankly’s men in 72
22 Anfield wins on the trot
A top flight record held by few
Wilson in for Lerma’s low cross
Hundred club Mo joins the brass
Mane completes the comeback
Goal line hero Milner is pure class

Hot Press
I watched the first half live last night
then I switched off
for I guessed what would follow:
lauded team of Albion, one down to an early, fluky goal
a team unquenchable in the domestic league
but up against
a needling, durable, desperate bunch
who’ve found their form in this one game
back to their obdurate best
led by a clever, craggy, capricious coach
who went to the hot press
and found his blanket defence
ironed, starchy and creaseless
and sure enough
by game’s end
still a clean sheet
Sadio is back with a bang
Norwich 0-1 Liverpool
An goalless opening first half
All set up for a solitary hero
The Canaries did very well
To keep the goal tally zero
Alisson is the worlds best goalie
No need for any protesting
Anyone who says otherwise
Surely needs their head testing
78 minutes on the clock
Hendo clears the airway
Sadio with the right, Sadio with the left
One hundred goals up for Mane

Saints to Saints
Liverpool 4-0 Southampton
Liverpool open up the biggest ever lead
Maybe a monument to Klopp they’ll erect
Saints beaten and the boss is cool
‘Not even close to being perfect’
With a second in as many league matches
Old boy Oxlade scores after the break
Henderson’s calm finish makes it three
Salah’s brace a full on headache
In English top flight history
A fable which is ancient Greek
Only Bill Shankly’s Reds in 1972
Had a longer winning streak

Red knees up in London
West Ham 0-2 Liverpool
139 passes from Hendo
Our skipper looks a good bet
Wise words from Herr Klopp
‘The title is not won yet!’
Now 23 from 24
Thanks Oxlaide Chamberlain
Powered in and struck it sweet
Its yet another Red win
Jurgen’s side may not have been
At their absolute best flow
Each team seen off to beat a feat
From 124 years ago

‘You’re Supposed To Be At Home’ is an excellent and moving poem Denys.
You start off thinking it’s just about another oft-sung chant, one we personally heard a lot last season throughout our second relegation in a row here at Forest Green(FGR) ! I always love poems where you think they are saying one thing and then they suddenly pull you deeper to somewhere or something else else.
I’m currently helping in a local school for FGR in a voluntary capacity using football to help young students with reading. At an upcoming session we will tackle racism, just like we did in workshops at football schools and grounds when we first started this site 24 years ago. I’m gonna try and weave your poem into a session.
We’ve added it to the Anti- Racism/Kick It Out section under Crispin’s Corner.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys…
Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
