Arsenal for afters
We look the part
And top of the chart
Klopp say’s no need to excite
One hundred percent start
Looking extra smart
Soars high that bright red kite
Matip has the heart
Salah is pure art
Born for that limelight
Torreiro pulled the cart
But the Gunners fell apart
In this one sided Anfield gunfight

Yo Adrián we did it!
Super Cup Final 2019
Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea – Reds win 5-4 on penalties
Chelsea were the tougher team to beat
Lampard’s men take the lead through Giroud
The Reds go full steam and raise the heat
Fabinho to Firmino and Mane was shrewd
Kepa pulls off a ridiculous stop
Mount thought he’d scored the winner
Mane scores, will Liverpool shut up shop?
But Jorginho is this time the sinner
It’s penalties and the Reds strike five
What’s guaranteed now is great pain
Tame Tammy thwarted by Adrian’s dive
In Istanbul we did it again

Champions League Final 2019: Liverpool and the power of six
Estadio Metropolitano for the cup
The Reds were hardly sublime
Klopp was happy to soak it up
And lift Big Ears for the sixth time
Salah’s penalty wasn’t that sound
Twelve months, how time flies
Origi bangs, we’re Anfield bound
With the continents biggest prize
Spurs tried but lacked the kill
Total shutdown Alisson Becker
The City of Liverpool is at a standstill
As the Reds get the Double Decker
Rome Seventy Seven, London Seventy Eight
Henderson fulfills a dream
Paris Eighty One, a Rome Eighty Four date
Istanbul and Madrid Nineteen

With God on Their Side
On the banks of the Mersey there is a divide,
Two teams with long histories for primacy vie.
The one that I root for plays in blue and white,
While the other in red has God on its side.
There’s a big-handled Trophy, they’ve won it six times,
Then in open-top bus round the city they ride.
Their anthem they sing, and their chests swell with pride,
How could they achieve that sans God on their side?
Rome Seventy Seven, Olimpico packed,
When Tommy Smith struck, ’twas the end of ‘Gladbach.
The Koppites did laugh, while Borussia cried:
“Those red-shirted Scousers have God on their side!”
Year later at Wembley the margin was tight,
One strike from King Kenny enough on the night.
Though Bruges battled bravely, they won not that fight,
When ever did Belgians have God on their side?
Next up Eighty One when they went to Paree,
Their task was quite daunting – they faced Real Madrid.
Yet the English in red beat the Spanish in white,
And with God on their side, just the one goal sufficed.
Another three years and they went back to Rome,
Opponents were Roma, yes, playing at home!
All thought they stood no chance of stemming the tide,
But not for the first time, they’d God on their side.
Score level at one-one when ref blew full time,
A penalty shoot-out was what was required.
Bruce Grobbelaar danced as he stood on his line,
And the Reds missed just once, while the Romans fluffed twice.
Three down against Milan in Two Thousand Five,
Yet they flew back to Anfield with Cup at their side.
Though Paolo Maldini God did not dislike,
That bloke Berlusconi He could not abide.
And finally this year they took on the Spurs,
The Londoners played well, but still came off worse.
Had loads of possession, but net could not find,
No prizes for guessing who’d God on their side.
Now we poor Bluenoses have nowhere to hide,
Like Old Mother Hubbard our cupboard is vide.
The truth is the truth, and it can’t be denied,
We’ll just have to face it, God’s not on our side!

Game of Beauty
Game of Duty:
take your pick, either or both, provided great drama
bettered again just days later
by ‘Pool beating Barca
only unbelievably
the drama ratcheted up even more, the following night
as Spurs slipped 3 goals behind on aggregate, versus Ajax
and then we witnessed, the mother of all comebacks
and the sight of an Argentinian hard-man crying
for there could be no denying
that Pochettino, has worked miracles
as has Klopp –
so who will be King of the Crop?
who is it, on 1st June
will make us swoon
and in the media zones
ascend to the Line of Thrones?!?
Mission Impossible – “with hope in your hearts!”
“Your Mission – should you choose to accept it
Is to beat Barcelona 4-0
Without Mo Salah
Without Bobby Firminho
And with Andy Robertson going off at half-time
And, with old-boys Coutinho and Chewy Luis grinning and gurning
Somehow you have to introduce, pace, passion and rhyme.
Good luck with that!
This tape, just like your chances
Will self-destruct in 3 seconds”
At kick-off
There just aren’t enough Tom Cruise stunt doubles
To alleviate Liverpool’s troubles
But, as it turns out
There were 54,000 script-writers there last night
Who hoped and believed
And left Anfield, both stunned and relieved
Elated and sated
Canonising Klopp and his team
And living, the impossible dream!
30 Years Ago ~ 15.4.89-15.4.19
tears still fill our eyes
for those souls lost needlessly
on this very day ~
Gordon Banks – England’s number one
Pele screamed “Gol”
Alberto and Jairzinho tricky
Banks saves heart and soul
Modestly terming it “lucky”
Brilliance from the World Cup winner
In the heat of Guadalajara
Chesterfield, Leicester, Stoke, FIFA
Named six times keeper of the year
Once the Kop lauded merrily
“Nice work, Gordon,” sang the ranks
Lap of honour with Bill Shankly
You’ll never walk alone Gordon Banks

Reds shade seven goal thriller
Liverpool 4-3 Crystal Palace
All is good with the Premier League
In the land of the well heeled
Roy bought over his Eagles
For a goal fest at Anfield
Townsend got the ball rolling
Salah and Bobby look nifty
Tomkins makes it level again
Speroni gifts Mohamed his fifty
Mane creates some daylight
Milner sent off the park
Meyer with one at the close
Reds reach the thousand goal mark
This poem is a dedication
For a lifelong Red who’s flown
Farewell dear Jenny Hodge
You’ll never walk alone
In loving memory of Jenny Hodge (Sealeaf)

Boxing Day battering for Magpies
Liverpool 4-0 Newcastle
Boxing Day footballs on
Rafa’s come to town
Yet the Toon army leave
With a great big whopping frown
Joselu spurned a good one
Lovren stepped up to the test
With a cracking half volley
He is simply the world’s best
Salah causes havoc in the box
An early second half sting
Penalty despatched cleanly
By the Reds Egyptian king
Trent lays a tap in for Shaqiri
But still no sign of fatigue
A fourth headed home by Fabinho
Liverpool, Liverpool, top of the League

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
