Canaries creamed in season’s opener
There’s something about Jumuah
When Salah hunts his prey
Six goals in five games
All this on a Friday
Grant Hanley scores the seasons first
As he slices Origi’s cross
Firmino turns provider
Salah adds his gloss
Virgil van Dijk from Salah’s cross
Origi heads to make it worse
Canny Pukki reduces the deficit
It’s time to break that second place curse

Yo Adrián we did it!
Super Cup Final 2019
Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea – Reds win 5-4 on penalties
Chelsea were the tougher team to beat
Lampard’s men take the lead through Giroud
The Reds go full steam and raise the heat
Fabinho to Firmino and Mane was shrewd
Kepa pulls off a ridiculous stop
Mount thought he’d scored the winner
Mane scores, will Liverpool shut up shop?
But Jorginho is this time the sinner
It’s penalties and the Reds strike five
What’s guaranteed now is great pain
Tame Tammy thwarted by Adrian’s dive
In Istanbul we did it again

Champions League Final 2019: Liverpool and the power of six
Estadio Metropolitano for the cup
The Reds were hardly sublime
Klopp was happy to soak it up
And lift Big Ears for the sixth time
Salah’s penalty wasn’t that sound
Twelve months, how time flies
Origi bangs, we’re Anfield bound
With the continents biggest prize
Spurs tried but lacked the kill
Total shutdown Alisson Becker
The City of Liverpool is at a standstill
As the Reds get the Double Decker
Rome Seventy Seven, London Seventy Eight
Henderson fulfills a dream
Paris Eighty One, a Rome Eighty Four date
Istanbul and Madrid Nineteen

The 6 European Pups
My Dad came home the other night, he’d found these 6 wee pups
He said I think we’ll name them after European Cups
I don’t know where he got them, but I don’t think they were free
Born to a lovely mother her name called Shankly
We’ll call the first one ROME son, the first European Cup Final for The Reds
And here’s a weena pound for you,go out ‘n by 6 beds
He said ROME will always bring good memories to a Father and a Son
Goals from McDermott.Smith ‘n Neal,the scoreline was 3 1
The second pup we called WEMBLEY, two years in a row
Dad didn’t buy the pup a lead, just a pure red bow
He said if that pup’s hungry it’s food is on the shelf
We beat Club Brugge by 1nil that night, A goal from King Kenny himself
The third pup was simply named PAISLEY as he’d won it 3 times now
81 in Paris Barney Rubble take a bow
Real Madrid came looking to defeat the famous “Pool”
1 nil the scoreline yet again, The Reds they kept their cool
The fourth pup wouldn’t stop barking, Dad was ready to get the gun
I shouted no no no Dad this one it’s called FAGAN
I said it’s legs are shaky just like Grobbellaar that night
We won 4 2 on penalties, old Big Ears wearing red ribbons again, oh my what a sight.
The 5th pup was very easy to name, RAFA it was called
A magic night in Istanbul, A 3 goal deficit overhauled
AC Milan thought they had it won celebrating with their fans
But never write off The Liverbird as it had other plans
3 0 down and all you could hear was You’ll Never Walk Alone
Liverpool with number 5, it was coming home
The 6th pup was a German Shepherd and we had to call it KLOPP
After our amazing manager who’s taking us back to the top
This pup was also funny as it didn’t have a bark
And wagged its’ tail every time it heard the sweet silver song of The Lark
Yes Madrid we made it number 6 for European Cups
And me ‘n Dad had so much fun naming all these little pups.

Tommy Smith RIP haiku
not just some hard man
Tommy lived and loved to play
for his Liverpool
Derby on Mersey
Liver birds have seen Liverpool
Liverpool had been known by them
Alan Ball fans communicated
using red telephone boxes
having Blue soul
Every new Derby on Mersey
is the eventful opportunity
to talk about any past Derby on Mersey
18 September 1948 with the record attendance
Nearly 80.000 fans saw the match at Goodison
Today, there will be one,
Were you at the match when
Everton had had Danny Cadamarteri?
Were you at the match when
Everton had Maurice Johnston?
Pat Nevin, one of the Mersey Derby scorers
of the early 1990’s loved The two Blue Colors
One of Chelsea and one of the Toffees
Kevin Sheedy, Irish Blue wizard
Inevitable Sharpie
Inevitable Tony Cottee
Andrei !
The generation who was young in the early 1990’s
who saw something before millenials
Today there is Everton v Liverpool
WAYNE CLARKE- will be scoring today ?
Or who is today’s WAYNE CLARKE for
this derby game?MISTER SIGURDSSON GOODISON today
Or if you had known him, sometimes
the best was
ROY Vernon, EVERTON
who loved the stoicism of the fans
Football Lighthouse
There’s a dream that I left back in childhood
In the overgrown grass down a lane
On a park named my very own Anfield
A place where the child used to play
Where the days stretched out long in the summers
And the shadows of age had no stage
On a park where I danced down the wings
Jinking runs where the child loved to play
There’s a dream that I harbour from childhood
Where the ghosts of my youth choose to play
And the lighthouse of football shines brightly
On that pitch where the child aye still plays.
This Football Life
In a certain light
My son looks like the grand-father he never knew
My son, all grown up,
A Burnley born boy with Scouse blood coursing through his veins
But most of all in his sardonic sense of humour
His grandfather would’ve loved him as much as I do
My father is present by his absence
31 years ago today he passed
And we didn’t speak for four years before
Locked into a defiant angry silence that killed both of us in different ways
But as a child from the best view
Safe atop his shoulders, I found Liverpool, Shankly, Home
I look at my son
With his wry smile,
Standing upright in the world, finding his place
Loving his footie and sharing his stories with me
Just like his grand-dad once did with his child
And I know forgiveness.
Gordon Banks – England’s number one
Pele screamed “Gol”
Alberto and Jairzinho tricky
Banks saves heart and soul
Modestly terming it “lucky”
Brilliance from the World Cup winner
In the heat of Guadalajara
Chesterfield, Leicester, Stoke, FIFA
Named six times keeper of the year
Once the Kop lauded merrily
“Nice work, Gordon,” sang the ranks
Lap of honour with Bill Shankly
You’ll never walk alone Gordon Banks

Reds shade seven goal thriller
Liverpool 4-3 Crystal Palace
All is good with the Premier League
In the land of the well heeled
Roy bought over his Eagles
For a goal fest at Anfield
Townsend got the ball rolling
Salah and Bobby look nifty
Tomkins makes it level again
Speroni gifts Mohamed his fifty
Mane creates some daylight
Milner sent off the park
Meyer with one at the close
Reds reach the thousand goal mark
This poem is a dedication
For a lifelong Red who’s flown
Farewell dear Jenny Hodge
You’ll never walk alone
In loving memory of Jenny Hodge (Sealeaf)

‘You’re Supposed To Be At Home’ is an excellent and moving poem Denys.
You start off thinking it’s just about another oft-sung chant, one we personally heard a lot last season throughout our second relegation in a row here at Forest Green(FGR) ! I always love poems where you think they are saying one thing and then they suddenly pull you deeper to somewhere or something else else.
I’m currently helping in a local school for FGR in a voluntary capacity using football to help young students with reading. At an upcoming session we will tackle racism, just like we did in workshops at football schools and grounds when we first started this site 24 years ago. I’m gonna try and weave your poem into a session.
We’ve added it to the Anti- Racism/Kick It Out section under Crispin’s Corner.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys…
Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
