Suarez is the key
Saudis toothless lock is picked
Uruguay march on

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Iran 0-1 Spain
Costa on the bounce
knees one in past brave Iran
Spain v Iran & Morocco v Portugal
Spain v Iran
Iran
Ran and ran
Though the first halfs game plan
Failed pretty miserably.
Then a cruel twist of fate
Snatched scant chance of victory away
Proving it clearly wasn’t their day
Courtesy of a ricochet off Costa’s knee.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Morocco v Portugal

Cool dude Christy Ron
Nuts one in early on
Yet Portugal continue to struggle, tis odd?
Could it possibly be
One Portuguese,
Blessed with sublime artistry,
Can carry an under-performing squad on his Tod?

Absolutely felt for Morocco
Who really gave it a go
Yet with one game to play are now done
I could launch a verbal attack
On a cynical Portuguese centre back
Whose cheating histrionics are anything but…fun
Though…“Cheats rarely prosper”, I was warned by me mum!

World Cup day 7

Ronaldo knocks out Morocco
Portugal 1-0 Morocco

Ronaldo again with the magic
This time an in the box spinner
At the Luzhniki Stadium
Yet another World Cup winner

All eyes on the Madrid star
After his hat-trick against Spain
Maroc lost the bid too
A whole kingdom feels the pain

It took the captain four minutes
Morocco failed to spot the threat
Diving onto Moutinho’s cross
An unstoppable header in the net

Suarez swoops to send Charrúas through
Uruguay 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Luis Suarez once again
Creates World Cup history
The very first Charrúa
To score for Uruguay in three

One nil suits his team fine
Atletico Madrid on the global stage
Saudi were at best lacklustre
They seriously need to engage

Top of the table with Russia
El Pistolero’s goal will suffice
And to Phil Neville we say
They’ve only won the damn thing twice

Spain edge Team Melli
Iran 0-1 Spain

La Roja scraped a tough win
Sit with Portugal atop of Group B
They made it hard but still
Got an unconvincing victory

Spain’s only goal came
After Rezaeian and Costa met
An unlucky clearance
Ricocheting into his own net

Team Melli rallied
Smashed home by Ezatolahi
Wild celebrations ensued
But VAR did not agree

Late Late Hat-Trick haiku-WC Day 2

Egypt 0-1 Uruguay

toothless Suarez finds
La Celeste left lacking bite
til that late late goal

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Morocco 0-1 Iran

95 upon the clock
in another late late show
settled by own goal

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Cristianogal 3-3 Spain

early and late late
Ronaldo lights up the night
as only he can

World Cup day 2

Day 2

Unlucky Pharaohs sucker punched

Egypt 0-1 Uruguay

There’s a mystery in Ekaterinburg
Where missing seats are aplenty
Suarez looked well sluggish
But Cavani is equally lively

Carlos Sanchez’s free kick
Evades the rookie El Shenawy
Giménez heads in for Uruguay
A first opening win since 1970

We saw a defensive masterclass
Egypt now look to get on track
Godin was simply flawless
But Salah will soon be back

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No boots, no sweat
Morocco 0-1 Iran
So a second African team
Succumbed to a late strike
Iran win with seconds to spare
To stick two fingers up at Nike
It may have been to Queiroz
“The hardest group of the World Cup”
With only a second ever win
His team are surely on the up
Again this one settled late
No boots, no sweat
Aziz Bouhaddouz defending a set piece
Heading into his own net
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ronaldo 3-3 Spain

Portugal 3-3 Spain

At the table of Ronaldo
The whole of Portugal sups
He’s now the fourth ever player
To score at four World Cups

Penalty gold in the first half
Who else but Ronaldo
Two from the bullish Costa
A swerving screamer from Nacho

I called it the moment the ref blew
Ronnie’s 51st career hat trick
This thrilling Group B opener
Squared with a vicious late free kick

#WC2018 generic Haiku

bright sun radiates
shorts slip on so easily
World Cup fever starts!

wise words on the web
artist alights on the pitch
ball enters the net

sun, moon, stars, align
superstars create and shine
stage set for goalfest

keeper shouts “away!”
ten discordant reactions
frenemies within

everybody
wants to believe it is in
GLT says no

screaming, arms aloft
conviction guaranteed
VAR says no

no-one on the post
quick corner creates havoc
could’ve should’ve

strolls around the park
photogenic and spreads play
darling of the paps

bench-warmer
enters the fray and scores
game changer

shirts, shorts and socks
couturiers run amok
colour by design

formation planning
blanket defence to smother
park the bus

hopes on young shoulders
unburdened by past failures
swivel, shoot, score

proud moments
representing your country
kit included

holding hands
sponsored match mascots
jail otherwise

prettiness required
catwalk stars must shine so bright
Mondial make-up

Lamps: over the line
Diego’s dirty digits
both: truisms

run up to World Cup
undefeated in friendlies
hope springs eternal

football at its best
Nation unto Nation joust
every four years

colour, passion, skill
endeavour, tacticians, rules
fifty shades of play

Form. Storm. Norm. Perform.
Goal: non-elimination
Setting high standards

Russian Campaign

Napoleon tried in eighteen-twelve,
But didn’t have much luck.
Then Hitler swooped in forty-one,
Yet he too came unstuck.

Now England’s bound for Russia,
Though this time there’s no war.
We’re not hell-bent on conquest,
Just want to play football.

Our hopes, as ever, are sky-high,
That Cup’s there for the taking.
While less stout hearts – France, Spain, Brazil,
With fear are all a-quaking.

The Russian President’s not keen
On us, but listen, Putin –
In Heav’n above our Patron Saint,
Brave George for us is rootin’.

Red cross against white background,
With pride his flag we wave,
And lustily in song we ask
Our God the Queen to save.

We’re set to leave the EU,
Because “Brexit means Brexit”.
But from this tournament let’s pray
We don’t make a swift exit.
