Tommy Smith RIP

With their captain at the helm
The Liverpool fans never worried
For their hard-hitting number 4
Was hewn from rock, as per Shankly.. “aye, quarried”

They said that Merseyside mothers kept his picture on the mantelpiece
To keep their kids away from the fire
And his team mates knew the pyrotechnics that would ensue
If they didn’t match his desire

And yet the “Anfield Iron”
Was respected by all of his peers
Even if he’d just nudged, budged or bludgeoned
And reduced even the best, to turmoil and tears
