NAT LOFTHOUSE fired in a shot, which FARM couldn’t hold.
“What a great start,” our team’s doing well,
Then tragedy struck our left half, ERIC BELL.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Although badly injured, he stayed on the field,
Hobbling on the left wing, he wasn’t going to yield.
Enforced positional changes made, the game carried on,
Until MORTENSEN’s deflected shot, made it one-one.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Bolton’s fighting spirit came to the fore,
BOBBY LANGTON centred for WILLIE MOIR to score.
Thanks to our RALPH BANKS, STANLEY MATHEWS wasn’t in the game,
For Bolton to win The Cup, we needed more of the same.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Early in the second half, the Scoreboard wasn’t telling lies,
Bolton went three-one up, I just couldn’t believe my eyes.
Injured ERIC BELL, headed home a cross from the wing,
“We’re going to win The Cup” we all began to sing.

MORTENSEN got a goal from a STAN HANSEN mistake.
Blackpool then began their remarkable revival,
It was now a game of endurance and survival.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The energy sapping pitch, plus the heat of the day,
Little ERNIE TAYLOR was making our defence pay.
Bolton looked dog-tired and dishevelled,
With minutes to go, the score was levelled.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 STAN MORTENSEN equalised with a thunderous free-kick,
The atmosphere was changing, I was feeling a bit sick.
Extra time was looming as MATHEWS got the ball,
Dribbling past defenders, he was careful not to fall.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 From the bye-line he crossed for BILL PERRY to score,
Making it Bolton Wanderers Three, Blackpool Four.
The tension and drama was over, it was more than Wembley Stadium had ever seen,
STANLEY MATHEWS won his Cup Winners Medal, he received it from Her Majesty The Queen.
