My son has bought
a brand-new pair of boots,
his first, and is preparing

My mind goes back
to my own schooldays, the winter afternoons,
the tension of the matches, and the pride
of victory, or the bitterness of defeat.
Looking at these pristine and
unworn Nikes
my son will soon put on,
I say a silent prayer
and wish him goals.
