Alas, poor football; once I loved him well
when I was in my prime and full of hope
but now I hear the tolling of the bell.

From Roker Park to Maine Road and the Dell,
he’d sink a dram with misanthrope and pope.
Alas, poor football; once I loved him well.

The volume of the crowd once could propel
a football down that famous Yeovil slope,
but now there’s just the tolling of the bell.

The dollar signs helped formulate a spell
and now his sparkling jacket’s changed to taupe.
Alas, poor football; once I loved him well.

The moneymen have rung a lavish knell
and turned his life into a lavish soap –
its theme tune now the tolling of a bell.

They dug up Eden; then they planted Hell,
a backdrop to the gently swaying rope.
