Tortoises have long championed football
They’ve always had their names on their back
Admittedly ‘Fred’ and not ‘Ballack’
Painted in leftover white paint
Lovable Fred but speedy he ain’t

The tortoises go to all the away games
On a specially designed slowcoach
With ventilation so they don’t poach
In their shells
Or create bad smells

They don’t require comfort stops or pies
They’re happy with a bowl of lettuce
The food of choice for these go-getters
And they don’t touch the booze
They’d rather close their eyes for a snooze

On their day, they can beat the hare
Other times, beaten for pace by a snail
They can win hands down or abysmally fail
So maybe your team will be the tortoise
Or they’ll just come second like the hare!
