‘and of Henry

A nation’s hopes destroyed
by moment of blatant cheating.
Master craftsman Henry
now in same bracket
as Maradona.
Moments of sublime skill
when Thierry ran
teams ragged,
leaving bemused defenders
trailing in his wake
before gliding the ball
with pinpoint precision
into expectant net
now forgotten.
Embarrassed applause to
French faithful after the match
all too much for tearful Irish hordes.
Henry’s attempt to console
shattered Irish players
merely an empty gesture;
extending the hand of friendship
the ultimate irony.
